Hurricane Sandy sweeps around the island in Jamaica. The people living in Jamaica have taken refuge in shelters and their homes as it caused landfall near the capital, Kingston.

As per the data released by National Hurricane Center, the island is pounded by heavy rains and sustained winds of 125km/h.

To keep the people safe and to deter looters, curfew has been imposed in many towns of Jamaica. Airports and schools have also been closed. It has been warned by forecasters that the category one hurricane is expected to strengthen further.

A statement has been released by NHC which states that at about 20km/h, Sandy has moved north across Jamaica and it has emerged off its northern coast near the town of Port Antonio. It has also been feared that flash floods and mudslides can be produced after these rains. It could take place  in areas of mountainous terrain.

It has been expected that Haiti, Bahamas and Cuba will be hit by tropical storm conditions, before it reaches east coast of Florida.

Crocodiles have been caught in rushing floodwaters in some southern towns.

Prime Minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson had to cut down his trip to Canada. He flew back home before the international airports of the island shut down.
